Lines Beyond the Face
What changes when lines extend beyond the outline of a head?
Start with heads whose boundaries remain easy to follow, then look at the marks extending into the surrounding space. Diagonals, loops and crossing lines connect the features to a larger pattern. Later works make that separation less clear. Follow one line outward and notice when it stops describing a face.
The Boundary Holds
Four works where a recognizable face dominates the composition, even as lines press against its edges and begin to extend past them into the surrounding field.

View & watch drawingA thick black scaffold holds the rectangular head firm against a saturated red field framed by a hard yellow border; a prominent wavy white line crowns the top, white triangular teeth read clearly against the black-outlined mouth rectangle, and crossing lines in magenta, green, blue, and teal flood every interior surface, with white canvas visible through gaps in the density.

Nifty Faces #7

View & watch drawingLarge squared eye-frames with white interiors and teal-scribbled pupils, a wide tooth-filled mouth with prominent white triangular teeth, and a yellow scribble crown give the face considerable internal color variation against a vivid red field; teal outline loops extending into that red field signal that the boundary is already giving way despite the face's internal complexity.
Where the first work leaks loosely into open teal, this one is hemmed by a hard yellow border and a red field — the pressure is comparable but the container is visibly tighter, and white gaps in the interior confirm the line density rather than a filled ground.
The previous work holds its shape through thick black scaffolding with a yellow border containing the red; here the yellow border is gone and the red field presses directly against the face's teal and green interior zones, making the boundary feel more contested even as the face's own structure remains readable.

View & watch drawingA rigid cyan-and-white outline holds a near-square head against dark navy; magenta concentric-ring eyes pull attention inward while ribbon lines of cyan, red, and yellow spill into all four corners.
The previous work's red field pushes inward from outside; here the dark navy recedes and the face's own lines are what escape outward into the corners — pressure direction reverses.
Overflow as the Main Event
Five works where the lines escaping the face are as visually prominent as the face itself — the boundary and the field competing on equal terms for attention.

View & watch drawingMismatched eye heights and a striped mouth anchor the face, but the spiky scribble field pressing inward from every edge competes with the features for attention.
The previous work's overflow stays ribbon-like and peripheral; here the scribble mass is dense enough to crowd the face from all sides simultaneously.

View & watch drawingRed X marks inside heavily cross-hatched oval eyes and a grimace-wide tooth band hold the center, while colored lines spill past the face edge into a jagged, unclosed border.

Nifty Faces #16

View & watch drawingHard wedge and shard forms in red, magenta, teal, green, and black shoot to every edge of a bright yellow field; white canvas shows through wherever lines thin, making the composition simultaneously dense at center and open at the periphery. Two small rectangular eye zones at center are the only still point in a composition that pulls entirely outward.
The previous work's scribble field presses inward toward the face; here the lines press outward — direction reverses, but the face is equally contested in both.
The previous work retains a closed face shape with leaking edges against a dark ground; here the ground is a saturated yellow and closure is abandoned — multicolored shards dominate and the face is reconstructed only from what the crossing lines leave at center.

Nifty Faces #30

View & watch drawingLooping yellow lines spread like unraveling wire across the upper half while the stacked-block face below holds firm; the hot-pink field and cool layered shapes at right pull in opposite directions.

Nifty Faces #3

View & watch drawingBold black outlines and distinct color zones — a red-filled crown, teal-green and yellow face areas, a clearly nested-square eye, and a red-arc mouth with white teeth — hold the face more legibly than the surrounding magenta and black scribble lines suggest; those scribbles spill into all four corners of a mottled teal and yellow field without fully dissolving the structure beneath.
The previous work's overflow is sharp and angular; here hard wedges give way to looping wire — the energy is comparable but the texture shifts from shards to coils.
The previous work keeps a firm block-face anchoring the lower half against a hot-pink field; here the face retains bold outlines and distinct color zones but the scribble lines are denser and the ground breaks into teal, green, and yellow patches — the face is legible but the surrounding field is more active and less unified.
Density Without Outline
Three works where the face emerges from accumulated marks rather than drawn edges — features readable only because lines pile up more thickly in some areas than others.

Nifty Faces #9
nnxyz
View & watch drawingLooping and short scribble lines in purple, magenta, red, teal, and white accumulate across a patchwork of orange, yellow, and teal ground areas until the face is a site of density; two small dark-outlined eye forms are the only fixed points inside the surrounding chromatic noise.
The previous work still has a legible arc-mouth and squared eye against a teal-green field; here those anchors reduce to two small dark forms nearly swallowed by the scribble mass, and the ground beneath breaks into warm and cool color patches rather than holding a single tone.

Nifty Faces #5
nnxyz
View & watch drawingThe face is built entirely from multicolored looping lines — blue, green, yellow, white, red, magenta — with no solid fills; features emerge only where loops compress most tightly, and the background's dense magenta scrawl punctuated by black diagonal marks and white gaps pushes the face forward without a hard edge doing that work.

Nifty Faces #25

View & watch drawingPale radiating spikes dissolve the head's boundary into the warm looping background; the tooth-filled mouth with its hard black outlines is the one remaining anchor where figure and field share the same line weight everywhere else.
The previous work's scribble lines are short and directional over a patchwork warm-and-cool ground; here long looping coils replace them and the background adds bold black diagonal marks visible through the magenta density — the face becomes even less outlined and more accumulated, but the background is more structurally active than before.
The previous work holds the face forward through contrast with a busy background; here face and ground use identical line weight, and the boundary nearly disappears.
The Grid Imposed on the Dissolving Face
Three works that place rectangular framing or a structural grid over a face already losing its boundary — testing whether geometry can recover what the overflow has dispersed. In each, the ground beneath the grid remains open rather than saturated, and the white canvas itself becomes part of the answer.

Nifty Faces #57
nnxyz
View & watch drawingFour loosely divided quadrants on a largely white and open ground place face-parts — two spiked-circle eyes, one with a red cross, and two barred rectangular mouth-forms with white interiors — as arranged elements rather than a unified drawn face; the white canvas showing through extensively makes the grid feel provisional rather than structural.
The previous work dissolves the face through shared line weight against a busy looping background; here a loose quadrant grid attempts to reassemble face-parts on an open white ground — but the grid's own lines are soft and the white space between elements keeps the reassembly incomplete.

Nifty Faces #10
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA tilted rectangular form densely packed with crossing lines in teal, magenta, green, black, red, and orange sits against a soft pale yellow field; two small spiral eye forms anchor the composition while white loops and the yellow ground's openness contrast sharply with the interior density, making the tilt feel like pressure rather than geometry.

Nifty Faces #12
nnxyz
View & watch drawingStrict rectangular framing — two large boxed spiral eyes with red and purple concentric rings, one long zigzag-mouth rectangle with white teeth — holds the composition together on a largely white ground; colored line extensions in red, black, green, blue, and magenta reach into the white surround without filling it, making the rectangles the dominant visual fact against open space rather than a saturated field.
The previous work divides into four roughly equal zones on an open white ground; here the whole structure tilts and the pale yellow field replaces white openness — the grid feels less like a container and more like another layer of pressure bearing down on the dense interior.
The previous work's tilted grid sits against a soft yellow field; here the rectangles are upright, the ground is white and open, and the spiral eyes and zigzag mouth assert the last clear structural claim the face can make — geometry holds where density alone could not.
