Looking into Circles
When is a circle an eye, and when is it a pattern?
Circles and coiled lines can describe eyes, repeat as patterns or organize an abstract arrangement. Follow those different roles across rounded sockets, layered heads and less clearly facial compositions. Compare the marks inside a ring with the lines extending beyond it. A similar shape can offer quite different points of entry into these images.
Two Eyes, One Face
These works place spiral forms at eye level inside a recognizable head shape, opening the gallery's central question with the most direct evidence available.

NNOTB #123
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo square-framed spiral coils sit at eye level inside a dark rounded head; the face-reading is immediate, though loose radiating lines resist any settled calm.

NNOTB #120
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwin gold spirals inside a white void ringed by black repeat the paired-eye structure; the teal field and radiating scribbles keep the figure unstable.

NNOTB #80
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTight concentric spiral eyes dominate the upper half of a compact dark figure; the near-black ground presses the coils forward with more intensity than either predecessor.
Both works place two coiled forms at eye level, but nnxyz nnotb #123's amber warmth gives way here to cooler gold against flat teal, sharpening the contrast between spiral stillness and surrounding noise.
Where nnxyz nnotb #120's teal field holds the figure at a distance, nnxyz nnotb #80's near-black ground brings the spiral eyes close, making the coiled rings feel less decorative and more confrontational.

NNOTB #161
nnxyz
View & watch drawingSpiral eyes with small radiating lines sit inside a rounded head packed with layered color zones; the face is legible but crowded, the coils competing with everything around them.

NNOTB #228
nnxyz
View & watch drawingRed spiral eyes on a flat purple-blue ground give the head a diagrammatic quality; the coiled rings read as pressure rather than sight, pulling the face toward emblem.
nnxyz nnotb #80's dark ground isolates its spirals; nnxyz nnotb #161 floods the same face structure with gold, teal, and red, so the coils must hold their ground against a much noisier interior.
nnxyz nnotb #161's layered color interior gives way to nnxyz nnotb #228's flat purple-blue field, stripping the face back to outline and spiral so the coils become more emblem than anatomy.
Pairs and Doubles
These works place two spiral or circular forms side by side, testing whether the pairing reads as eyes, as symmetry, or as something else entirely.

NNOTB #151
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo spiral-filled squares sit side by side — one wound in warm reds, one in cooler whites — with a zigzag band between them that reads as a wide toothy opening; face-logic is present but distributed across geometric containers.
nnxyz nnotb #228's single head with two red spiral eyes gives way to two separate spiral squares; the face structure is now split across distinct geometric forms rather than held inside a unified outline.

NNOTB #77
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo large rectangular amber-loop forms glow side by side in the upper half; pale diagonal beams and a zigzag band below give the pairing a structural weight without resolving into a head.

NNOTB #145
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo square-framed spiral coils sit inside a boxed rectangular form, surrounded by dense radiating lines; the spirals hold a mechanical stillness while the outer marks press against the border.
nnxyz nnotb #151's two spiral squares are dense and confrontational; nnxyz nnotb #77's paired amber forms are warmer and more open, the loops pulling inward while pale beams push the eye downward.
nnxyz nnotb #77's paired forms float in open space; nnxyz nnotb #145 encloses its two spirals inside a drawn rectangle, adding a layer of containment that the radiating outer lines immediately contest.

NNOTB #235
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo oval head-forms share the frame, each with spiral eye sockets; the warm orange grid presses against both figures so foreground and background compete at equal visual weight.

NNOTB #149
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo large spiral knots dominate the center without a head shape to contain them; the pairing reads as eyes or as pattern depending on where attention lands.
nnxyz nnotb #145's spiral pair sits inside an abstract box; nnxyz nnotb #235 returns the double structure to recognizable heads, but the grid background refuses to let the figures read as simply as faces.
nnxyz nnotb #235's paired spirals sit inside drawn heads; nnxyz nnotb #149 removes the head entirely, leaving two spiral masses on a pale ground where the face-reading becomes optional rather than given.

NNOTB #113
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo glowing concentric circles burn at center against a dark surround; pale rays push outward while competing border marks — zigzags, loops, dots — crowd every edge.

NNOTB #194
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo looping orbital forms flank a thick vertical black bar; the arrangement suggests a face without committing to one, holding both readings open simultaneously.
nnxyz nnotb #149's two spirals sit in relatively open space; nnxyz nnotb #113 surrounds its paired circles with dense layered marks on all sides, so the glowing cores feel pressurized rather than free.
nnxyz nnotb #113's paired circles glow with clear intensity; nnxyz nnotb #194 replaces that warmth with a heavy black vertical divider, making the face-reading cooler and more ambiguous.
The Circle Enclosed
Here the circular or spiral form is surrounded, contested, or crowded — held inside a boundary while the marks within press against it, making containment the visible subject.

NNOTB #226
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA thick black ring holds a crowded interior — coiled yellow form, red-orange bar, white rectangular blocks — while outside marks press against the circle's edge, making containment the visible subject.
nnxyz nnotb #194's face-like arrangement is open and scattered; nnxyz nnotb #226 draws a hard black boundary around its interior, so the tension between inside and outside becomes explicit.

NNOTB #179
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA large circle ringed by small blue ovals and red dots encloses two mismatched interior zones; the dense outer ring reads as containment while yellow waves and pink drips inside push against it.

NNOTB #102
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo spiral-filled rectangles with a red cross overlay sit inside a dark field bordered by magenta dots and dash-marks; a white bar strip below introduces a sudden calm that sharpens the surrounding density.
nnxyz nnotb #226's black ring is a single drawn outline; nnxyz nnotb #179 builds its boundary from a repeating chain of small oval shapes, so the containment feels constructed mark by mark rather than imposed in one stroke.
nnxyz nnotb #179's circular boundary holds organic interior zones; nnxyz nnotb #102 replaces the circle with rectangular containers and adds a dot-and-dash border, shifting the sense of enclosure from rounded to gridded.

NNOTB #159
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo yellow-outlined spiral-filled squares sit inside a black arch edged with orange spikes; crossed boxes below and a striped oval at the base add competing layers of containment within the same frame.

NNOTB #280
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA white-outlined oval on black holds dense looping lines and two contrasting eye-like forms; a cluster of marks spilling past the white edge makes the pressure from within visible.
nnxyz nnotb #102's rectangular containers sit on a flat dark ground; nnxyz nnotb #159 adds an arching black boundary above its spiral squares, layering one enclosing form inside another.
nnxyz nnotb #159's arch holds its contents; nnxyz nnotb #280's oval is already breached — a cluster of marks breaks past the white boundary onto the black ground, making containment visibly incomplete.

NNOTB #198
nnxyz
View & watch drawingAn oval on olive green holds three spiral clusters of different sizes and colors pulling in competing directions; blue diagonals and a red zigzag band cut across the lower half, spreading tension across the whole form.

NNOTB #199
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA rounded form on slate blue holds two coiled spirals, a red diagonal band, and stacked zigzag lines; lime and teal patches push outward against the black containment lines.
nnxyz nnotb #280's oval sits on flat black; nnxyz nnotb #198 places its oval on a warm olive field, and the interior spirals multiply rather than unify, distributing the pressure across the whole enclosed area.
nnxyz nnotb #198's oval is organic and warm-grounded; nnxyz nnotb #199's enclosing form is heavier and more angular in its black outlines, giving the contained spirals a more compressed, locked quality.
Spirals Loose in the Field
These works let circular and spiral forms scatter across the surface without a clear head or enclosing boundary, testing how far the pattern spreads before any gaze disappears.

NNOTB #231
nnxyz
View & watch drawingThree spirals of different sizes hold an uneasy balance — the left one boxed, the center open, the right loose — with no single form dominating the olive-gold field.
nnxyz nnotb #199's spirals are locked inside a heavy outlined form; nnxyz nnotb #231 releases three spirals into an open field where size and placement, not a boundary, determine their weight.

NNOTB #156
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA red-orange disc with concentric white spiral rings sits beside a flat black mass on a white field scattered with small marks; the spiral pulls inward while the black mass holds flat.

NNOTB #34
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA single large coiled spiral dominates the center with a white dot at its core; isolated color blocks at the edges resist the pull, holding the composition in competing weights.
nnxyz nnotb #231's three spirals share a muted olive-gold field; nnxyz nnotb #156 places a single bright spiral disc against a white ground, isolating the coiled form so its inward pull is felt more sharply.
nnxyz nnotb #156's spiral sits beside a contrasting black mass; nnxyz nnotb #34 gives the spiral the whole center, but scattered color blocks at the edges refuse to let it resolve into a single focal point.

NNOTB #195
nnxyz
View & watch drawingAn orange border pulls inward toward competing focal points — an X-form, paired spiral zones, white loops — none settling into a clear hierarchy; the face-reading becomes one possibility among several.

NNOTB #227
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA dark central mass, a teal spiral in one corner, and a yellow zigzag crown offer three different circular rhythms distributed asymmetrically, so the eye keeps moving without finding a resting point.
nnxyz nnotb #34's spiral holds the center against scattered edge marks; nnxyz nnotb #195 multiplies the competing forms until no single element dominates and the eye keeps renegotiating where to land.
nnxyz nnotb #195's competing forms are roughly centered; nnxyz nnotb #227 distributes its circular elements asymmetrically across the field, pulling the eye toward different corners in turn.
The Face Returns
The final room brings the face back, but after the scattered works the spiral eyes read differently: as marks that could have stayed pattern but are now arranged into a gaze.

NNOTB #169
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA large face with golden spiral eyes shares a pink field with a smaller, tightly wound form; open ground between them reads as distance, and the spirals feel like pressure rather than sight.
nnxyz nnotb #227's circular elements float without a face; nnxyz nnotb #169 reattaches spiral forms to a recognizable figure, but the open pink field keeps the face from fully claiming the space.

NNOTB #142
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA red face with white spiral eyes sits inside a dense field of competing color bands; a large white spiral lower in the composition echoes the eye coils, as though the face's logic has spread outward.

NNOTB #68
nnxyz
View & watch drawingLooping lines pile onto a dark center until two coiled forms near the upper area suggest eye-socket positions; the face-reading is available but must be found rather than given.
nnxyz nnotb #169's face is loosely held by open ground; nnxyz nnotb #142's face is pressed by dense color bands on all sides, and the echo spiral below suggests the coiled form is escaping the face again.
nnxyz nnotb #142's face is explicit despite surrounding noise; nnxyz nnotb #68 buries the face-structure under dense layering so the spiral eye positions have to be located rather than immediately seen.

NNOTB #144
nnxyz
View & watch drawingTwo spiral forms anchor the upper half of a pink field — one warm yellow, one deep red — while an open-jawed form below and a column of squares at the right edge hold the composition in an uneasy face-like arrangement.

NNOTB #218
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA dark looping arch frames two mismatched eye forms — one cool and nested, one warm and open — above a wide white band edged in red; the face is assembled from clearly distinct parts, making the construction visible.
nnxyz nnotb #68's face emerges from dense layering; nnxyz nnotb #144's face-like structure is more legible but held in check by the right-edge column of squares, which reads as a flat mechanical counterweight to the organic spirals above.
nnxyz nnotb #144's face-like arrangement is spread across a pink field; nnxyz nnotb #218 compresses its face parts under a heavy dark arch, making the assembled quality of the face — arch, mismatched eyes, white band — the thing the eye notices first.

NNOTB #196
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA rounded form holds a tight dark spiral at center-left and a competing grid of clashing lines at right; the face-reading is possible but the two interior zones never fully agree, leaving the gallery's question open.
nnxyz nnotb #218's face parts are legible and distinct; nnxyz nnotb #196 presses its spiral and its grid zone together inside one rounded form, leaving the boundary between gaze and pattern unresolved at the gallery's close.
