Finding Faces in a Crowd
What lets one face emerge from a crowded drawing?
Begin with recognizable faces surrounded by crossing marks, then follow drawings containing additional heads and figures. A pale outline, a colored area or a gap between lines can become a point of entry. Compare the marks within one head with the crossings between several characters. Dense surfaces do not all organize recognition in the same way.
One Face, Clearly There
These works open with figures that remain readable — faces that give the eye a place to land before the surrounding marks begin to accumulate.

View & watch drawingBlack silhouettes press upward against a flat yellow field; their shared XX marks make each head legible while the group reads as a single mass.

NNOTB #276

View & watch drawingA single hatted figure fills the frame; the contained head above and dissolving strokes below show one face holding while the rest of the image comes apart.

NNOTB #251
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA large face crowds the picture edge, its layered eyes watchful; the fragmented lower blocks split the image into face and surrounding noise.
From anonymous silhouettes to a distinct individual: the hat and concentric eye rings give this figure a specificity the crowd below lacked.
The hatted figure was centered and stable; here the face presses to the frame edge, making legibility feel more pressured and less settled.

NNOTB #208

View & watch drawingA skull holds center against a teal ground while color lines pull outward; hollow eye sockets keep the face readable through absence rather than mark.
The previous face was built from rings and fills; this one is structured by voids — the empty eye sockets make the skull legible through what is missing.
Faces Multiplying
Recognizable figures begin to repeat — mouths, eyes, and heads recur across the surface until no single face commands the space alone.

NNOTB #0000
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA skull contains a second face within it, while a smaller sun-face occupies the corner; three distinct presences share one image without merging.
The skull in the previous work was singular and centered; here a second face nests inside the first, introducing the idea of faces containing faces.

NNOTB #10

View & watch drawingThree toothed mouths stack inside one bulging purple-red form, each paired with coiled eye marks — faces nested within a face, the surface layered and pressured.

NNOTB #176
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA large circle on cobalt blue holds a heart, a flower, and a striped wedge that reads as a grin; competing interior forms make the circle itself feel face-like.
The nesting in the previous work was spatial — one skull around another; here three mouths are built into a single form's body.
The previous work nested faces explicitly; here the face is implied — a circle whose interior accumulates enough features to read as a head without declaring itself one.

NNOTB #71

View & watch drawingDozens of small oval faces ring the border while larger open-mouthed figures crowd the center; the image is entirely populated, with no neutral ground remaining.

NNOTB #221
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA broad arched form anchors the center while a smaller snarling figure crowds the upper left; two figures at different scales pull against each other without resolving.
The previous work held its forms inside one circle; here faces escape every boundary, lining the edges and filling the center simultaneously.
The previous work distributed faces evenly across the surface; here scale difference creates tension — one large form, one small intruder, neither yielding.
The Crowd Turns Loud
Color and mark-making intensify. Mouths open, lines multiply, and the drawings become harder to read as any single coherent scene.

NNOTB #183
nnxyz
View & watch drawingFour open-mouthed forms crowd an amber field, each built from looping spirals and jagged teeth; white lines move freely across all of them, refusing to settle into any one figure.
The previous work held two figures in tension; here four faces press forward simultaneously, the amber ground pushing them all toward the viewer at once.

NNOTB #182

View & watch drawingFive spiky-ringed faces crowd a near-black ground; a lone pink flower and yellow spiral above the central figure are the only calm shapes in an otherwise agitated surface.

NNOTB #14

View & watch drawingSix elongated shroud-like figures rise in a loose row, each head built from yellow, cyan, magenta and white linework with a wide-open mouth and dark oval eyes; their bodies trail downward as long semi-transparent streaks through which warm peach and orange background tones remain visible. A dense black serrated band of spike forms lines the bottom edge, pressing upward against the figures. Large luminous white-edged circles float across the upper zone, overlapping the pink and peach ground. The image holds both the ordered row of the chapter and a layered translucency that keeps the figures from fully solidifying.
The warm amber ground of the previous work is replaced by near-black; the faces are now ringed by jagged lines rather than looping ones, sharpening the sense of agitation.
The previous work placed five faces against a near-black ground, their jagged rings sharpening every edge; here the ground opens into warm peach and pink, and the figures' bodies become semi-transparent, so the row of heads is legible but the forms beneath them dissolve into the background color rather than holding firm.

View & watch drawingFive round-headed figures are pressed forward by white outlines against loud color bands; two open mouths range from wide grin to dark gap, keeping the gathering's mood unresolved.

NNOTB #177

View & watch drawingBlack rectangular masses and hot color zones pack the plane; a red-outlined face near the bottom — wide eyes, open mouth, arms spread — reads as surrounded by the surrounding density.
The previous row of heads dissolved downward into streaks; these figures are outlined and edge-sharp, holding their form even as the color bands behind them compete.
The previous work used white outlines to separate figures from ground; here no such separation exists — the face sits inside the same density as everything around it.
Figures Crossing, Lines Taking Over
These works push toward maximum density. Figures overlap until one form's edge becomes another's body, and the final work tests whether a face was ever fully there.

NNOTB #19

View & watch drawingA seated central figure extends limbs outward while bared teeth recur at the margins; a floating white rectangle holds open a gap in the surrounding density.
The previous work surrounded its face with color masses; here a figure has limbs and posture, but repeated mouth fragments at the edges keep it from reading as singular.

NNOTB #254

View & watch drawingThree figures caught mid-action — arms raised, teeth out, dome swelling between them — share a black sky without any one commanding the space; spectacle and unease coexist.

NNOTB #238
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA dark mass holds center against an orange field while blue slashes cut across at angles; the white bar cluster reads as both noise and anchor in a composition that refuses to settle.
The previous work's figures were pressed flat by color; here a black sky and spatial separation suggest depth, yet the figures still compete rather than recede.
The previous work distributed figures across a legible space; here the central form is ambiguous — mass rather than figure — and crossing diagonals deny any stable reading.

NNOTB #1

View & watch drawingSeveral toothy heads overlap with raised limb-like forms; broad cyan passages open brief gaps, but one face's outline keeps becoming part of another's body.

NNOTB #1 fork
nnxyz
View & watch drawingHeads and limb-like forms weave together in colored marks; the drawing alternates between recognizable characters and almost illegible crossings, making looking a repeated act of finding and losing.
The previous work's ambiguity came from a single dominant mass; here multiple heads compete, and the cyan gaps are the only breathing room in the tangle.
Both works share overlapping heads and cyan passages, but here the colored marks layer more completely over the figures, making each face harder to hold.

NNOTB #193

View & watch drawingYellow strokes, a red spiral cluster, and crossing lines fill the field without resolving into a face; any figure found here is the viewer's own construction.
The previous work still offered recognizable heads amid the crossings; here the marks no longer assemble into a face — the question the gallery opened with goes unanswered.
