Dark Marks and Bright Areas
Which bright and dark areas make a face easier to locate?
Compare bright contours, colored eyes and pale surfaces with the darker areas around them. Some heads stand against dark surroundings; others place deep eye hollows or layered marks within a lighter ground. Follow those contrasts through sparse and more densely crossed drawings. A small accent can become a useful landmark without fixing the whole face into one reading.
Surface and Presence
Four faces where the form is still largely readable, but the surface already resists easy description — layered with marks, translucent overlays, or tonal depth that complicate what lies beneath. Backgrounds range from near-black to pale and luminous, but in each case the surface itself becomes the primary obstacle to easy reading.

View & watch drawingSoft overlapping circles dissolve the background into pale gold; two blue irises hold steady as the only cool, fixed points in a warm haze.

Nifty Faces #58

View & watch drawingDense overlapping lines in red, yellow, teal, and white layer across a pale, luminous ground; large translucent grey circles diffuse the space around the face while deep maroon eye hollows remain the only zones of concentrated darkness, pulling attention inward against the otherwise open, light-filled surface.
Where the previous face is pressed forward by a dark surround, here the background glows softly, yet the downward tilt creates a similar sense of guarded distance.
The previous work's pale gold glow and steady blue irises gave a clear, fixed focal point; here the ground is equally light but the eye positions become dark voids, and attention disperses across a surface of crossing colour rather than settling on any single feature.

Nifty Faces #100

View & watch drawingMuted teal and rust diagonal bands hold the face in place; a burst of gold and blue at the crown is the one point where the image releases pressure.
The previous work's muted lavender-grey palette gives way to teal and rust bands, but both share a compressed, downward-cast quality that withholds direct engagement.
Line Against Dark
Four works where darkness has claimed most of the surface and drawn lines — rather than tonal gradation — carry the work of keeping a face present.

Nifty Faces #103

View & watch drawingHorizontal dark-blue-grey washes cover most of the face; orange lines trace structure without filling it, leaving the form open to the pale ground behind.
The previous work's diagonal bands were muted but still colourful; here the wash is heavier and cooler, and the face begins to recede rather than hold its ground.

Nifty Faces #104

View & watch drawingWhite lines cross cheekbone and jaw while cool blue and warm red fields pull against each other; the face tilts downward into shadow at its lower edge.

Nifty Faces #69

View & watch drawingBlack eye sockets read as pure absence; white scribble lines layer over olive-grey skin like static, while a rigid geometric net below presses against the softness above.
Both works use line to describe structure over a dark field, but here competing warm and cool grounds create a tension the previous work's quieter palette avoids.
The previous work's unresolved edges dissolve into ground; here a hard diagrammatic shape at the bottom makes the collision between two visual systems explicit.

Nifty Faces #71

View & watch drawingA long black face hangs inside a heavy arch of hair-like loops; white lines pick out drooping eyes and four elongated teeth, leaving most of the interior empty.
The previous work's geometric net imposed an external system on the face; here the surrounding arch is organic but equally enclosing, and the interior is even more stripped back.
Buried Under Marks
Three works where the face is covered by dense, competing mark-making. The question of recognition shifts from shadow to sheer visual accumulation.

View & watch drawingCrimson borders press inward from all four edges onto a white ground; beneath the crossing blue, yellow-green, and red line-work, grey-brown tonal masses swirl to suggest facial volumes, and two red rectangles hold position as the only stable anchors inside a surface of continuous layered agitation.
The previous work's sparse white lines on black gave the face room inside near-empty darkness; here the white ground is almost entirely covered — by tonal masses, crimson borders, and crossing colour threads — replacing emptiness with dense, competing accumulation.

View & watch drawingBlack-outlined panels lock together across a dark mass; fanned white lines at the lower left and scribbled colour at the crown create tension between containment and exposure.

Nifty Faces #66
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA dark mass fills the frame; red, orange, and yellow-green lines gather thickest at brow and mouth, reading as friction rather than description of features.
The previous work spreads its marks across an open pale ground; here the same density is compressed into a sealed dark form on warm brown, making the pressure feel structural rather than scattered.
The previous work's outlined panels give the dark form a hard edge; here the dark mass has no such boundary — warm lines push back against it from within, with no clear resolution.
Skull Logic
Three works that strip the face back to its most reduced vocabulary — sockets, teeth, and outline — testing how little structural information recognition actually requires.

Nifty Faces #56
nnxyz
View & watch drawingEye sockets are dark holes; the jaw is a cage of vertical lines on a warm amber ground; orange outlines overshoot the form rather than containing it, giving the structure a restless quality.
The previous work's dark mass was built up from layered marks; here density is stripped away, leaving only outline and void — the face as hollow architecture.

Nifty Faces #72

View & watch drawingWhite patches assemble a skull-like face against pure black; repeated tooth loops make the grin feel insistent rather than fixed, holding the image between confrontation and dark comedy.

Nifty Faces #52
nnxyz
View & watch drawingThe face pushes outward rather than receding: white cross marks and a bold tooth row hold the eye at the surface, a structural contrast to the preceding skull works.
The previous work's skull sits on a warm amber ground with looping orange lines; here all warmth is removed — black ground, white patches only — making the reduction absolute.
Both works foreground teeth as a primary feature, but where the previous work recedes into black, here layered colour and asymmetric eye zones press the face forward.
The Last Light
Two works where darkness has absorbed most of the form and a single small accent — yellow bars, white marks — is all that remains to locate the face.

Nifty Faces #38
nnxyz
View & watch drawingBlue scribble-work covers the upper dome; two yellow-gold bars in near-black eye sockets and small white teeth below are the only warm light in a cold, shadowed mass.
The previous face pushed outward with dense colour; here darkness claims the bulk of the form and only two small yellow bars remain as evidence of a face.

Nifty Faces #28
nnxyz
View & watch drawingA tilted block floats in open teal space; a white spiral-and-cross and a cluster of white vertical bars are the only clear focal points inside dense hatching — an honest outlier that tests the gallery's question from a non-figurative angle.
The previous work holds recognition through two yellow bars in deep shadow; here white marks inside dense line-work serve a similar anchoring role, while the teal ground echoes the same question of how little is enough.
